Buying Used Cars

Buying a used car can be an excellent way to save money whether it is with property taxes insurance costs or the initial price of the car. They have a few issues, the main one being that they aren’t new and therefore don’t come with the warranty or the guarantees that a new car comes with and could potentially be in poor condition. In looking to buy a used car there are a few precautionary steps that you can take to reduce the risk of ending up with a vehicle that is subpar in quality or is flat out a risk to your health and safety on the road.

The first way that you can attempt to avoid qualms when purchasing a used vehicle is to try to buy a newer one that still has a partial warranty or is new enough to not need any major work in the few years after you buy it. You should always look into finding a certified pre-owned vehicle because they usually come with some type of manufacturer guarantee. These vehicles usually have less than 50,000 miles on them and most vehicles have full services done before they are ready to be sold. Most importantly, the certified pre-owned vehicles that are on dealers lots are in general vehicles that were taken pretty good care of before they were traded in to the dealership. This is because the Certified, Pre-Owned vehicles don’t get that status unless their history and background is verifiable as good.

You should always do a background check on your own, there are many services now that can give you the vehicle history report on your vehicle which details most accidents and incidents the car was involved in as well as any major service that it had done on it. Besides a vehicle report you should do a lot of research into the reliability and quality of the vehicle you want to buy as well as the brand you are looking at. Deciding the car you want to get before you even go to look at cars is probably a good idea because you won’t get pushed into buying a car that you really shouldn’t get. Make sure that you can get access to the vehicles maintenance records because these can be very important in knowing how the previous owners took care of the car, if it had paint jobs or strange parts replaced or repaired there is a good chance that the car was involved with an incident that the owner didn’t report and could affect the quality of the car later in its life.

Next you need to make sure that the car will pass both the state safety inspection and the state emissions inspection, and that the car has an up to date inspection which means that it was at least in working condition at some point. My last recommendation is to have a personal mechanic who you know and trust take a look at the vehicle before you make the purchase.
