My Car Accident
Car accidents usually occur at either the most inconvenient times or at the most inconvenient places, I would know from experience. A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine asked me to travel with him to the beach for the week. I was very happy to go however I had to drive my own car in order to come home in time to leave on another vacation with my family. He was of course fine with that and road with me there. The week we spent at the beach was great fun, but when it was time to come home I had to leave.
About 20 miles into the trip home, in the middle of nowhere a man driving a large mercury sedan plowed into the back of my BMW while I was stopped at a traffic light causing the bumper to compress into the rear tires and the trunk to collapse inward. The first thing we did was make sure that everyone involved was ok, which turned out to be just me and the other driver. After making sure that we were ok we called the police and had a state trooper on the scene in a couple of minutes. The trooper did a run through and made sure that the cars were drivable, despite having to manually force the bumper off the tires by jerking it back into place the car ended up being able to be driven to a gas station 30 feet away where we did all of the paper work. The paperwork itself wasn’t too tedious; however it wasn’t something I would do for fun on the weekend.
I was finally able to drive the car home and with that came the troubles of getting into a car accident that most people don’t think about on the spot when it happened. First I had to contact both my insurance company and the person who hit me’s insurance company to notify them of what had happened. Then I had to contact the police station to get a copy of the police report in order to give to the insurance agencies. Since it was the other drivers fault, his insurance company recommended a collision center for me to go to which I had to take the car to almost immediately.
I was able to rent a car and drive it until a week later when my car was finally completely repaired and good as new. So if you ever find yourself in an accident; check that everyone is ok, make sure that you get all of the insurance information, then make sure that you get all of the drivers contact information, then get a copy of the police report (don’t forget to call the police first), and finally don’t forget to keep your insurance company and the other driver’s insurance company involved. If you do things right, and the accident was not your fault, you can pretty much restore your car to its original condition for free.
